After celebrating his birthday with his parents and friends Banks is called to investigate the murder of Estonian Katrin Vesik, who worked in a beauty salon and had recently been in a fight with racist Shane Harris. Katrin had come to England to find her sister Annika and had rung the police the night she died. Katrins colleague Jodie tells Banks that Annika was involved in drugs and prostitution though entrepreneur Jason McCready, boss of an escort agency, denies knowing her. Michael Osgood, another victim of racism and father of autistic Robbie, however admits that he knew Annika. Whilst investigating the crime Banks must also deal with a family tragedy.
